Estimating time-dependent entropy production from non-equilibrium trajectories

چکیده

Abstract The rate of entropy production provides a useful quantitative measure non-equilibrium system and estimating it directly from time-series data experiments is highly desirable. Several approaches have been considered for stationary dynamics, some which are based on variational characterization the rate. However, issue obtaining in case non-stationary dynamics remains largely unexplored. Here, we solve this open problem by demonstrating that can be generalized to give exact value even dynamics. On basis result, develop an efficient algorithm estimates continuously time using machine learning techniques validate our numerical analytically tractable Langevin models experimentally relevant parameter regimes. Our method only requires interest without any prior knowledge system’s parameters.

Time-dependent, irreversible entropy production and geodynamics.

We present an application of entropy production as an abstraction tool for complex processes in geodynamics. Geodynamic theories are generally based on the principle of maximum dissipation being equivalent to the maximum entropy production. This represents a restriction of the second law of thermodynamics to its upper bound. In this paper, starting from the equation of motion, the first law of ...

Reconstructing equilibrium entropy and enthalpy profiles from non-equilibrium pulling.

The Jarzynski identity can be applied to instances when a microscopic system is pulled repeatedly but quickly along some coordinate, allowing the calculation of an equilibrium free energy profile along the pulling coordinate from a set of independent non-equilibrium trajectories. Using the formalism of Wiener stochastic path integrals in which we assign temperature-dependent weights to Langevin...

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics, maximum entropy production and Earth-system evolution.

The present-day atmosphere is in a unique state far from thermodynamic equilibrium. This uniqueness is for instance reflected in the high concentration of molecular oxygen and the low relative humidity in the atmosphere. Given that the concentration of atmospheric oxygen has likely increased throughout Earth-system history, we can ask whether this trend can be generalized to a trend of Earth-sy...

4 Maximum Entropy Production and Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics

Over the last 30 years empirical evidence in favour of the Maximum Entropy Production (MEP) principle for non-equilibrium systems has been accumulating from studies of phenomena as diverse as planetary climates, crystal growth morphology, bacterial metabolism and photosynthesis. And yet MEP is still regarded by many as nothing other than a curiosity, largely because a theoretical justification ...

Entropy Production: Its Role in Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics

It is unquestionable that the concept of entropy has played an essential role both in the physical and biological sciences. However, the entropy production, crucial to the second law, has also other features not clearly conceived. We all know that the main difficulty is concerned with its quantification in non-equilibrium processes and consequently its value for some specific cases is limited. ...
